The Great Britain Under 18's suffered an opening game defeat at the hands of Lithuania on Saturday evening, at the 2012 IIHF World Championships in Heerenveen, Holland.
GB started strongly and punished some early penalty trouble for the Lithuanians with two Powerplay Goals within 30 seconds during a 5 on 3 battle.
With Cetvertak sitting a 2 minute penalty for slashing on 3.14 and then Bacevicious then also sitting a 2 minute for slashing on 4.11 the GB Powerplay took control of the 2 man advantage. Dundee Stars Jordan Cownie opened the scoring on 4.50 when he tipped in Bobby Chamberlains shot from just inside the blue line. On 5.21 it was 2-0 to GB when Danny Rose poked the puck in from close range.
Straight from the restart the Lithuanians pushed forward, and on 5.51 it was 2-1 when Deksnys fired the puck past Russell in the GB Goal. The goal seemed to settle the game down with several chances falling to bothteams as the period progressed. Wit GB pushing forward and having the better possession it was a cruel blow when Lithuania broke away on 17.22 to draw level thanks to Cetvertak.
The period break gave the GB team a chance to re-group, and the second period opened with them being the dominant team for the opening 10 mins. However on 31.25 the Lithuanians capitalised on a GB mistake and Cetvertak punished GB with his second goal of the game. The turnaround saw the Lithauniand confidence rise and they extended their lead to 2 on 32.48 when the impressive Gorelis scored his first of the game. GB called an immediate time-out to settle the team, and despite playing most of the last 5 minutes with a man in the box GB held on to the break.
The final period started with GB needing an early goal to get back into the game, but it was the Lithanians who struck the early blow when Deksnys scored his second of the game, and Lithaunias 5th on 41.52.
GB pulled a short handed goal back on 44.51, when with JJ Pitchley sitting a 2 minute tripping call, Bobby Chamberlain crashed the net, and the Lithanian netminder and defence, to put the puck into the back of the net to make it a 5-3 game.
Bouyed by the goal, GB pushed everything forward, but on 49.51 they were causght on the break by the Lithaunians and Nomanovas clinically finished to make it 6-3.
GB survived a 2 minute 5 on 3 in the last 8 minutes and despite theoir best efforts they couldn;t find a way past Zukovas in the Lithaunian goal who stopped several good GB chances, and was the busier of the two netminders.
A lapse in concetration in the final 2 minutes, saw GB gift a pass straight to Bogdziul in the slot, who fired the puck into the GB net to make it a final score of Lithuania 7 - 3 Great Britain.
Man of the Match awards went to Daniel Bogdziul and Floyd Taylor.
